The Media and Democracy Karol Jakubowicz Award was established in 2018 by Małgorzata Semil-Jakubowicz and since the very beginning the Polish Communication Association has been an institutional partner of the Award. It is granted to outstanding contributions in the areas of scientific interests of Karol Jakubowicz. The goal of the Award is to support scholars who contribute to studies on democracy, human rights, media ethics, media policy and public service media.
The Selection Committee for the Award includes: Małgorzata Semil-Jakubowicz (Honorary Member of the Committee and the Award Funder), prof. Iwona Hofman (Chair of the Committee; President of the Polish Communication Association; Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin), prof. Alicja Jaskiernia (University of Warsaw), dr. Hanna Machińska (Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw), prof. Michał Głowacki (University of Warsaw), prof. Beata Klimkiewicz (Jagiellonian University), prof. Elżbieta Matynia (the New School for Social Research), Halina Rostek, prof. Jerzy Olędzki (Honorary Member of the PCA), prof. Slavko Splichal (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) and joint Presidents of the International Association of Public Media Researchers (IAPMR) - Dr Alessandro D'Arma (University of Westminster) & Dr Maria Michalis (University of Westminster).
Since 2021 the Award is organized in collaboration with the Journalism Education Foundation (Polish: Fundacja Szkolnictwo Dziennikarskie).
